Our Bread Specials

While the Bread Garden makes many breads every day of the week (sometimes twice a day!), there are certain breads we make only on particular days.  Here's a list of those breads:

Tuesdays:  Kiwi Bread--a popular bread in New Zealand.  It is 50% coarsely cracked wheat and rye with no added sugars or fats.  It is crunchy yet light and has a wonderful grain flavor.

Wednesdays:  Salt-Rising Bread--we are the only bakery in the San Francisco Bay area making this very old-fashioned American white bread, which is still found in stores east of the Mississippi River.  In spite of the name, there is no greater amount of salt in this bread than in any other bread--its chief characteristic is a cheesy aroma and a creamy texture.  It makes wonderful toast for many days after you buy it.

Thursdays:  Honey-Oatmeal Bread--a true comfort food.  White sandwich bread with the crunch of rolled oats and the sweetness of a generous amount of honey.

Friday:  Challah (Egg Braid)--the classic Sabbath bread for our Jewish customers and all other customers who enjoy a good egg bread.

Sunday:  Potato-Onion Bread & Baguettes--we began making this bread in 1974 as German Potato Bread.  The original recipe was given to us by a Jewish baker who said it was the Sabbath bread of the Jewish neighborhoods of his pre-World War II German home.  Sometime in the 1980's we began to add onions which had been browned in butter and this has been a Sunday favorite since then.

Last Monday of Each Month:  Sesame-Millet Bread--our 100% whole wheat bread recipe with toasted sesame and millet seeds added.  Wholegrain goodness with crunch and great taste.
