About
Us
The Bread Garden Bakery was started in 1973 by David Morris, who is still the owner (and writer of this webpage). There are six bakers and one assistant baker producing our products--they have been with us for an average of 17 years! Long, Duong, and Chuong Ly (they are brothers) arrived in the United States in 1980 (having operated the top French bread bakery in Saigon) and became our night baking shift. Otilio Rodriguez came to the Bread Garden 16 years ago after working for 25 years in his own bakery in Guatamala. Steve Vogt began as a salesclerk at the bakery 12 years ago and became a baker a few years later. Our newest baker, Hassan Mooel, originally from Iran, had his own bakery in Berkeley's Walnut Square for 13 years. This is how our products can be consistently good--the same people have been making them year after year.
The only place Bread Garden products can be bought outside of the bakery itself is at the Berkeley Bowl--we decided long ago that we want to remain a neighborhood bakery.
On any given day the Bread Garden makes 80-100 different products. While some of our products are found in many bakeries (croissants, bear claws, baguettes, etc.), many things we make are rarely found in Bay Area bakeries (Salt-Rising Bread, Kiwi Bread, Danish Pumpernickel (100% rye) Bread, Whole Wheat Danish, etc.).
